STEPHEN LEWIN (UK., FL.1890-1910), “THE ALARM”, OIL ON CANVAS, 31 1/2″ X 40 1/2″, EXHIBITED AT THE ROYAL ACADEMY IN 1902 $7000-9000

REFER TO WWW.BURLINGTON.CO.UK/ARTIST-BIOGRAPHY/STEPHEN-LEWIN.HTML

Condition Report:

The canvas is very still and solid feeling.
Has been trimmed and relined, although relined from the back it allows transmission of light to the front with a cell phone flashlight.
There is a L-shaped restoration above the head of the central figure in the grey band of smoke/cloud.
Under a black light the varnish is hazy green throughout the central frieze of figures and there is a semi circular shape visible where the bandaged head figure is seated foreground.
The painting technique is very flat and we examined to make sure it’s not a doctored up print.
